Abstract

Gene frequencies in the domestic cat, Felis catus, in four French rural areas — Frequencies of eight genes (seven responsible for coat colour and one for hair length) are analyzed in French populations of domestic cats (Felis catus); for this purpose, exhaustive samplings have been done in four rural areas. Sex-ratio values are in favour of females. Our data are added to those obtained by other authors in order to perform a comparative analysis of rural and urban areas. This analysis reveals a disadvantage of the Orange allele in urban areas, whereas no tendency is shown for the other genes studied. These results are discussed in relation to the spatial heterogeneity of populations.
