Abstract

[Preface] This special issue of the journal Arkiv is the second volume in a series, Det vita fältet [“The white field”], that gathers Swedish and international research on the extreme or far right. Recent years have been marked by Nazi and Islamophobic acts of terrorism in Norway, Sweden, Germany and Italy, while the jackboot and the hatred once again asserts itself against Romanies and Jews in Hungary and the Balkans and the online newspapers’ comment fields have exploded with hate. But the far right’s offensive is held back by anti-racist mobilization, internal conflicts and failed attempts to form alliances. This volume brings together new research on Swedish anti-immigrant party Sverigedemokraterna (the Sweden Democrats) and the extreme right’s presence on the Internet, with contributions from Emma Arneback, Carl Dahlström and Peter Esaiasson, Anders Hellström, Ov Cristian Norocel and Ralf Wiederer. It also contains Mattias Gardell’s testimony at the trial of Anders Behring Breivik and the retirement lecture of legendary German professor Wolfgang Benz’, arguing for interdisciplinary research on prejudice.
