Abstract

The aim of performing surgery by laparoscopic access is to achieve the same benefit for the patient offered by laparotomy but with decreased operative morbidity and time to full recovery. Experience in laparoscopic surgery is limited in urology. There are no laparoscopic 'bread and butter' procedures akin to cholecystectomies in general surgery. Moreover, access to the genitourinary organs in the extraperitoneal space is difficult. Nevertheless, in the past 2 years steady progress has been noted with laparoscopic urologic surgery.
