Abstract

Severe blepharoptosis is commonly encountered in patients with various neurological and myogenic disorders. Other causes of severe ptosis include profound orbital trauma, oculomotor nerve injury, and repeated failed blepharoptosis surgeries. To date, I have surgically treated 32 eyes in 19 patients using silicone rods for frontalis slings and eyelid crease formation with supratarsal fixation. Silicone rod frontalis slings are an excellent method for functionally rehabilitating patients with severe blepharoptosis due to neurogenic, myogenic, or traumatic disorders. The procedure is safe and can be performed unilaterally or bilaterally under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The silicone rod's elasticity allows the patients to close their eyes, thereby avoiding corneal problems secondary to exposure keratitis.
