Abstract

It has been more than 100 years since the world’s first motor vehicle was invented (Figure 1.1). Since then, automobiles have been widely accepted in society with the progress of modern industry. Moreover, as shown in Table 1.1, since the invention of the first motor vehicles, chassis technology as well as components such as the tire, steering, suspension, brake, and power train have been extensively studied and equipped on vehicles to secure their handling, driving performance, stability and also to improve ride comfort. Table 1.1 shows that the fundamental theories of vehicle dynamics including modeling of vehicle motion and tire have been presented since the 1950s. These theories lead to a large growth in the study of vehicle dynamics and great development of various types of chassis control technologies during the last 20 years of the twentieth century. This section will brief on history of vehicle system dynamics based on Table 1.1 and a number of excellent state-of-the-art papers in the last two decades.
