Abstract

Front end structures have always made a substantial contribution to the safety of our vehicles. However, today, alternative power train configurations lead to considerable changes in packaging space occupation and mass distribution within the vehicle, making front end impact system design increasingly complex. The DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts in Stuttgart has developed an adaptable front end structure, allowing easy adjustment of the impact characteristics by using innovative peel tube absorbers. The crash response can be adapted for different power train configurations, but also to different international impact standards, without changing tool-specific components.
