Abstract

A metaphorical model is presented to guide ethical and pragmatic decision making in the use of strategic approaches within a general awareness orientation to psychotherapy. The therapist is compared to a locksmith who restores access to a client locked out of his own house. Issues of informed consent, dependency, and guided awareness are discussed, especially at shift points where strategic elements are introduced or withdrawn. Crucial elements in contracting such as advance provision for flexibility of approach and the discussion of possible negative effect of change are outlined.
