Abstract

Glycerin, a surplus biomass byproduct of biodiesel production, and CO2, an inexhaustible raw material, was successfully converted into glycerol carbonate, a high value-added chemical, using CaO as a regenerable dehydrating agent in the presence of Zn(OTf)2/1,10-phenanthroline as a catalyst. Mechanical stirring effectively suppresses the solidification of calcium components after dehydration, thereby greatly improving reaction efficiency. Since the carbon atoms of biomass-derived glycerin are derived from CO2 fixed by plant photosynthesis, all carbon atoms of glycerol carbonate stem essentially from CO2.
