Abstract

Backbone modification in β-turns is vital in the development of protein mimetics. Prior work has focused on the subset of turns that join strands of a β-sheet. The cover image, rendered in a style inspired by Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol, depicts four modification schemes among a series examined in a helix-loop-helix domain. Optimal artificial residue placement yields variants of the prototype sequence with native-like tertiary structure and improved thermal stability.
