Abstract

A new fatty acid synthase off-loading domain. Fatty acid synthase (FAS) usually releases its products by hydrolysis or transesterification. Here, an α-oxoamine synthase off-loading domain is identified in a cyanobacterial type I FAS. This domain releases the fatty acyl chain through a condensation with L-serine, offering a novel pathway to α-amino ketones that share similarities with sphingolipid precursors.
