Abstract

The Front Cover illustrates a crystal layer of nickel hydroxide that undergoes phase separation during electrochemical ion deinsertion (oxidation) and its corresponding cyclic voltammogram (CV). This phase separation phenomenon is revealed by a thermodynamic modelling of solid-solution and phase-separation reaction modes in battery cathodes. Furthermore, according to this model, the hysteresis observed during charge-discharge in the CV curves results from this phase separation which itself is a consequence of large radius changes in the crystal's central metal ion.
