Abstract
I was cleaning house in my “office” and came across an interesting letter. It was from J. Lamar Worzel. The J. stands for Joe. To many of us, Worzel is well known as an associate of Maurice Ewing. Ewing was a highly decorated geophysicist, receiving many awards for his marine research efforts, and most of the time, Worzel was involved. Worzel followed Ewing to the newly formed Lamont Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) at Columbia University. Most of the research there was marine based. I have a dim recollection of the early days of marine seismic exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. We used several vertical profiles with very long offsets to get an idea of subsurface velocities. As I recall, these were acquired by Ewing/Worzel's research at Lamont.
