Abstract

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Vaccine Development Programme jointly sponsored a Workshop on Respiratory Syncytial and Parainfluenza Viruses on 4 and 5 May 1987. The purpose was to assess the current status and future direction of research efforts on these two virus groups. In three sessions, speakers addressed topics of clinical perspective (Kenneth McIntosh, chair), viral genome structure and protein function (Gail Wertz, chair), and vaccine development and therapy (David Karzon, chair). Future research priorities, which are summarized below, were discussed at the end of each session.
