• Geophysics offer effective methods for understanding socio-spatial practices. • Angel social identities were negotiated in both monumental and residential landscapes. • Mound C was converted to a defensive structure as the Angel Mounds site contracted. • The lunar Angel Axis was repeated in residential architecture at hinterland sites. • Nearly one quarter of hinterland structures were aligned to the Angel Axis.
