We hope you are all healthy and, with vaccinations well underway, we will gradually be able to resume our usual, lively in-person philosophical exchanges. Over the past several months, we have heard anecdotal reports that journal editing has been particularly difficult during the pandemic. This has certainly been the case at Ethics. We have been extremely fortunate, though, in having a managing editor, Joe Muszynski, who has kept the journal running smoothly, helping us all to stay on top of the workload. We want to thank the associate editors, our book review editor, Billy Dunaway, and our reviewers for the exemplary job they have been doing under difficult circumstances. We also want to thank our authors and readers for helping to keep the philosophical conversations going. As our annual statistical tables show, submissions have continued to go up (see tables 1–3). We are happy to report that, even with the increased number of manuscripts, over 90 percent of submissions received a final decision within four months.Table 1. Each cohort includes all original articles and discussion pieces that were originally submitted in that calendar year. Data include each decision on all manuscripts in the 2019 and 2020 cohorts—in their original form and any subsequent revisions—irrespective of the year in which the decision was reached or the year in which the revised version of the paper was submitted. For this reason, the total number of decisions for each cohort is greater than the total number of submissions in that cohort. View Table Image Table 2. We have therefore revised those instructions to make needed clarifications and hope the changes we have made satisfactorily addressed any questions or concerns authors might have had. Some of the changes pertain to questions about the policy of Ethics with respect to pronoun use, in particular, use of ‘they’ and its cognates as the singular plural. As we hope will now be clear, Ethics recognizes this usage and respects the pronoun choices of its authors. The copy editor has been notified of this clarification of our policy. Other changes pertain to the process of submission, though mostly to submission of symposia proposals and the handling of manuscripts submitted as part of a symposium. We ask those submitting a manuscript or a symposium proposal to Ethics to read the revised instructions (which now appear on the Ethics website) before submitting. We continue to work on ways to improve our processes and our communication with our authors and readers.Wishing you all the best in what we hope will be a year of returning to (near) normal.
