It is also un aboutissement: the result of months of sustained work—research, writing, editing—by a large number of authors and editors. Once again, I am grateful to the editorial team— Managing Editor, Review and Assistant Editors—that helps to produce our journal. Many thanks to our Typesetter, Ronnie Moore (Westype Publishing Services), for her diligence and precision. Heartfelt thanks are also due to our Advertising Manager, Ann Sunderland. This issue contains familiar as well as new items. Our regular annual rubric, L’année littéraire, includes four articles that cover the previous year’s literary and cultural developments : le Roman (William Cloonan, Florida State University); le Festival d’Avignon (Edward Baron Turk, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, emeritus); l’Année poétique (Aaron Prevots, Southwestern University); le Bloc-notes culturel (Stéphane Spoiden, University of Michigan, Dearborn). A note regarding future volumes of the French Review: we are planning a similar annual article devoted to film. The details of this new article will be provided in a later issue. As the numbers listed above indicate, submissions to our journal continue at a steady pace (compared to last year, there is a slight overall increase). Literature is by far our largest rubric, and Focus on the Classroom our second-largest. By longstanding practice, the French Review publishes articles and reviews in all fields related to French and Francophone studies. Submissions are thus also encouraged for the Film, Linguistics, Interview, and Society and Culture rubrics. As previously announced, our special issue of May 2013 (vol. 86.6) will be devoted to the challenges and opportunities facing our profession. Please note also our new rubrics for shorter articles: Lettrismes: le français dans tous ses états and Actualités du monde francophone: applications pédagogiques (see Randi Polk’s “Reading and the French Elections” in this issue). A reminder to all authors wishing to submit articles and/or reviews to the French Review: our Guide for Authors is available online (www.wwu.edu/depts/mcl/french/FR). Authors should familiarize themselves with our guidelines before submission. Also, please note the specific formatting changes that will apply to reviews as of the start of vol. 87 (Oct. 2013). 9 From the Editor’s Desk: Report for the French Review, 2011–2012 Articles submitted 1 June 2011–31 May 2012 (Vol. 85) Looking ahead, our special issue for vol. 87 (May 2014) will be devoted to the centennial of the beginning of the First World War. This broad-based historical topic should appeal to scholars of literature and film, but also of bandes dessinées and cultural studies. The call for submitted articles is on the Announcements page of this issue. In closing, I would like to thank Thomas Hale (Pennsylvania State University) for his many years of service as Assistant Editor. Marie-Christine Koop (University of North Texas), who has ably served as Review Editor for Society and Culture, has now joined the ranks of our Assistant Editors. We welcome Frederick Toner (Ohio University) as Review Editor. Edward Ousselin, Editor in Chief 10 FRENCH REVIEW 86.1 ...
