Abstract

This article discusses the history and evolution of water filtration from the first major breakthroughs more than 100 years ago, through the early 1900s when filtration helped end cholera and typhoid epidemics; the 1950s and ′60s when filtration dramatically improved water quality by pretreatment and filter media design; the 1970s and ′80s when microfiltration was introduced and became widely accepted and the Surface Water Treatment Rule was promulgated; and, with the beginning of the new century regulations have gotten increasingly stringent, which has resulted in continued improvement of filtration processes.
