Abstract

This paper reflects on the unique relationship that college English instructors often have with the particular texts they teach by outlining how the short Biblical narrative of Esther grew from being part of one instructor's personal narrative heritage to being a component in her literature survey course. More specifically, it offers ideas on how Esther – a sacred text at its core – can function alongside longer texts from a variety of genres and historical periods to enrich the experience of students in a contemporary secular classroom.
