Abstract
Recently, van der Pol et al. have linked accumulation of 5-oxoproline to myocardial dysfunction and -in rodent studies- have presented depletion of 5-oxoprolinase (OPLAH) as a result of cardiac injury, while OPLAH overexpression improved cardiac function after ischemic injury [1]. The same publication did also report elevated plasma 5-oxoproline in patients with heart failure and has suggested circulating 5-oxoproline as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker.
