Abstract
Accidental ingestions in the geriatric population are likely more common than recognized. In Virginia, 2.3% of the exposures reported to a poison center in a 6 months period involved adults aged ≥60 years and 84% of those were unintentional. A nationwide study identified similar findings and found that cognitive dysfunction was the possible reason for the incident in 16% of cases. In 2013, The Toxicology Investigators Consortium Case Registry reported that adults older than 66 years accounted for 5.7% of the reported cases.
