Abstract

In the recent sociological literature there has been a resurgence of interest in one of the central problems of social theory: the relation between human action and social structure. Giddens' (1979) theory of structuration, Collins's (1981) microtranslation strategy and Burt's (1982) structural theory of action all challenge the methodological foundation of traditional macrosociology. This methodology holds societies to exist sui generis as entities characterized by emergent properties. It explains structure without reference to action.
