Abstract This paper proposes to design a dynamic controller from the measured impulse responses of the plant without constructing its parametric model like state space representation. We call the proposed method the response-based design method. Using the estimated impulse response of the system and the auto correlation matrices of the responses due to system and measurement noises, which are identified from the noise contaminated impulse responses, the LQG dynamic controller is designed. Some numerical results that validate the efficiency of the method is also presented.
