Abstract

THOMAS JEFFERSON READ LATIN AND GREEK with a facility that was exceptional even in an age when the ancient languages were part of every gentleman's education. He began with the rudiments at the age of nine' and continued to read the classical authors in their original languages throughout his life. The period of Jefferson's most passionate devotion to the ancient poets and philosophers dates chiefly from the time of his school days until the early 1770s when, at the age of 30, he turned his attention fully to the subjects of politics and government.2
