Abstract

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, there was much talk about Central Europe and Austria's role in it. Since then, Austria participated in various regional initiatives, but none of them became a coherent and comprehensive organization for political cooperation in Central Europe. At the same time, all Central European countries joined the European Union. This paper explores the reasons why the Austrian initiatives toward more political cooperation in Central Europe have failed and asks how Central European cooperation within the EU could be enhanced.
