Abstract

Traditionally, at most universities, the English methods course focuses on the profession in general, is designed to help prospective English language arts teachers strive to become professionals, and it typically does not focus on young adult (YA) literature. This chapter shares how teacher educators can use YA, particularly texts about social issues such as racism, classism, and sexism, to teach the objectives of English methods courses, explore the YA genre, and adhere to NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) standards for teaching English language arts, particularly the standards’ focus on antiracism/antibias instruction and being guided by theoretical perspectives.
