Abstract

The first anthology of gay plays, published only in 1979, classifies as gay any play ‘whose central figure or figures are homosexual or one in which homosexuality is a main theme’. Editor William Hoffman pinpoints Mae West’s Drag (1927) as the first American homosexual play. In Drag, as well as her Pleasure Man (1928) Hoffman hears a plea for sexual tolerance. I hear that plea also in Lillian Hellman’s Children’s Hour (1934), but Hoffman finds that she treats homosexuality ‘with little lucidity’.
