Abstract

This paper develops the method of an explanatory qualitative content analysis (EQCA) to conduct qualitative research in the United Nations and other international institutions. EQCA extends the method of qualitative content analysis (QCA) with elements from grounded theory. This method is based on constructivist and neo-institutionalist approaches to international institutions that emphasize the mutually constitutive relations between structures, ideas and agents. It aims to generate middle-range theories that combine theoretical and empirical analysis. Based on the concepts of interpretation and social causality, the paper contributes to the body of research that transcends the dichotomy between exploratory and explanatory approaches in International Relations.
