Abstract

ABSTRACT Implementing a successful elementary foreign language program for adults in the Weekend College (alternate‐week format) requires both the tools to bridge the gap between distance and time and a strategy for promoting self‐directed learning. This article focuses on the development process that culminated in a successful two‐semester Weekend College elementary French course at Saint Joseph College (West Hartford, CT). It outlines the challenges encountered, the characteristics of the multimedia method chosen to meet these challenges, and the pedagogical or, more appropriately, “andragogical” approach used to adapt this methodology to the specialized needs of the adult foreign language learner.
