Abstract

Being an underrepresented minority with a unique background in a research community can be peculiar and double-edged. Here, Dr. Jianhui Liu, a new Post-doctoral Fellow at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, shares his uncommon personal experience of transition from materials chemistry to dentistry without any previous dental research experience. He shares insights and suggestions for searching, selecting, and securing ("3S") a research position, thriving as a minority in a new research community, and long-term career development. This paper can help broaden the horizons of researchers, facilitate interdisciplinary research with healthcare applications, and enlighten junior researchers for future development.
