Abstract

The antiquities of Israel have been the focus of interest for many centuries to both local and foreign populations and governments. This paper reviews trends in archaeological site interpretation to the public during the last fifty years, since the establishment of the State of Israel. A brief description of the different bodies involved in site management and development is presented and the types of sites selected for presentation to the public during this period are examined. Six case studies of archaeological sites in Israel that have been interpreted to the public illustrate the various issues that have had to be addressed in light of the changing approaches and goals, over time, of governments, local authorities, and private organizations involved in conveying the message of the past.
