Impressions of what ‘ordinary people’ thought can be glimpsed through the eyes of those whose duty it was to visit them in their homes — the religious missionaries. The tone of the first extract, written at the height of Owenite activity, is typically Evangelical; while the second, in its more restrained approach, is equally typical of the Unitarian mission.
