Abstract

1136 ACSM guidelines suggest that exercise prescriptions should be tailored to individuals. This process is characterized as an “art” because the scientific understanding of the individual differences in preference for and tolerance of different amounts of exercise remains limited. The Preference for and Tolerance of the Intensity of Exercise Questionnaire (PRETIE-Q; Ekkekakis, Hall, & Petruzzello, 2001; Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 23, S9) is a self-report measure designed to assess preference for (PREF) and tolerance of (TOL) exercise intensity. PURPOSE: To evaluate the ability of self-assessed preference for and tolerance of intense exercise to predict the selection of exercise intensity. It was hypothesized that the PREF, but not the TOL, scale of the PRETIE-Q would predict the %VO2 at the ventilatory threshold (VT). METHODS: 26 healthy but sedentary women (mean age ± SD = 43.1 ± 4.7 yrs, BMI = 28.5 ± 6.1 kg•m2, VO2peak = 23.3 ± 5.4 ml•kg −1•min-1) participated in (a) a graded treadmill test (GXT) and (b) a 20-min session of treadmill exercise (SS), during which they were able to adjust the speed at min 0, 5, 10, 15. The VT was estimated from the GXT (Gaskill et al., 2001). RESULTS: The %VO2 at VT increased during SS from 83% (min 5) to 103% (min 20). PREF had increasingly stronger correlations with the %VO2 at VT (−.03, .29, .43, .46 at min 5, 10, 15, 20, respectively), reaching significance at min 15 and 20 (P< .05). Likewise, multiple regression analyses showed that, after controlling for age, BMI, and VO2peak, PREF predicted a significant amount of variance in %VO2 at VT at min 15 (P = .052, R2 = 17%) and 20 (P = .038, R2 = 18%). The TOL score was not a significant predictor. CONCLUSION: Individual differences in preference for exercise intensity account for a significant portion of the variance in %VO2 at VT among sedentary, middle-aged women. Researchers and practitioners should consider the role of such individual differences when developing exercise prescriptions.
