Abstract

As part of the settlement of the dissolution of her marriage to August Ferdinand Bernhardi in 1808, Sophie Tieck was given custody of her younger son Felix Theodor. Consequently, Felix accompanied his mother to Estonia in 1812 following her marriage to the land-owner Graf Karl von Knorring and remained there until he returned to Germany in 1820 to enrol as a student at the University of Heidelberg. Throughout those years he maintained an active correspondence with his uncle, the sculptor Christian Friedrich Tieck, which allows us to trace Felix's academic development and provides us with many insights into his integration into Russian life. Two characteristics in particular, his interest in languages and his fascination with military history, offer an early indication of the direction which his later career was to take.
