Abstract
A simple analytical model is used to show that, without buoyancy effects, the flow towards an inlet in shallow water exhibits a selective with drawal appearance if the sea floor is shelving towards deeper water offshore. This prediction is confirmed by field experiments in Koombana Bay, south-west Australia, and by a Hele-Shaw cell simulation.
