Abstract
Based on the interpretation of the laws of friction of Amontons and Coulomb as equations of linear regression of the friction force on the normal pressure force corresponding to the statistical processing of the experimental results, the values of the friction coefficients for six metal pairs are calculated. The principal difference between the values of the friction coefficient calculated in this way and the values calculated by simply dividing the friction force by the normal force is emphasized. Quantitatively, the difference can be more than twofold.
