Abstract

Friction stir spot soldering of galvanized steel plates was carried out using Sn interlayer with a pin-less tool without any form of brazing flux and the effect of tool rotational speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints was investigated. According to the rotational speeds, some intermetallic compounds were detected in the joint interface. Also, the intermetallic thickness increment was achieved with an increase in the rotational speed. As a solder joint, the shear test showed an outstanding result in the sample soldered at 1600 rpm and the fracture occurred in the base metal, which means the joint strength is higher than that of galvanized steel. However, at the other rotational speed fracture occurred along the interface at lower loads.
