Abstract

ABSTRACT The friction coefficient of alfalfa as affected by surface type, velocity, normal pressure, moisture content and water lubrication rate has been determined. For common values of the above parameters, the friction coefficients for polished steel, glass coated steel, polyethylene, iron oxide coated steel, and baked Teflon were 0.529, 0.490, 0.416, 0.402, and 0.375, respectively. Water lubrication at a rate of 11.4 L/h reduced the coefficient of friction by an average of 67% for all surfaces. The factors of normal pressure in the range of 37-207 kPa and velocity in the range of 16.7-38.1 m/s did not significantly affect the coefficient of friction of alfalfa.
