Abstract

Friction stir processing of medium-carbon steels using two standard size hard alloy tools is studied. Use of a small diameter tool for forming a steel fine-grained structure is shown to be promising. The reason for layered structure formation is explained. Results are given for wear tests of steel with friction treatment of the structure.
