Abstract

Ethylene–propylene diene monomer (EPDM) containing dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) as the termonomer has been precrosslinked with 0.2 phr dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and surface modified with 2%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 50% trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA) solutions at a fixed irradiation dose of 100 kGy and at irradiation doses of 0–500 kGy at a constant TMPTA concentration of 10%. The friction behaviour of the various modified rubbers over a range of normal loads, temperatures, and sliding speeds has been studied and explained in terms of the different mechanisms of rubber friction. The influence of the nature of acrylates, termonomers, rubbers, crosslinking agents and DCP doses at 10% TMPTA modification of the surfaces subjected to 100 kGy irradiation, on the frictional properties has also been reported.
