Abstract
The effects of inorganic salts on friction and wear properties of plasma-sprayed Cr 2O 3 coating were studied using a block-on-ring test machine under ambient conditions. The steady-stage friction coefficient is ranked from highest to lowest in the order NaCl, NaNO 3, Na 2SO 4, Na 2B 2O 7, Na 3PO 4 for sodium salt solution with various acid radicals and NaCl, MgCl 2, ZnCl 2, AlCl 3 for various chloride salt solutions. The wear volume of the block is ranked in descending order; i.e. NaCl, Na 2B 2O 7, Na 3PO 4 NaNO 3, Na 2SO 4 for sodium salt solutions with various acid radicals and NaCl, AlCl 3, MgCl 2, ZnCl 2 for various chloride salt solutions. The analytical results of the worn surface indicate that the wear mechanism of Cr 2O 3 coating in inorganic salt solutions is a combination of several wear modes involving microfracture, tribochemical and abrasive wear.
