Abstract
Titaniunl nitride coatings are often used to increase the wear resistance of steel. In this study, the fretting ear of TiN coatings sliding against a 52100 steel sphere as a function of relative humidity, normal force, displacelnent, and reciprocating frequency was measured in the gross slip regime. The critical values for transition from the partial slip regime to the gross slip regime were determined and displayed in a running condition fretting map, which indicates the different contact conditions. No stick regime was observed for TiN coatings. The critical values of displacement were reduced by increasing the relative humidity. Curves of friction coefficient against number of cycles were characterised by an initial rapid increase, followed by a small decrease and a steady state. The profiles of fretting scars were characterised by a small wear depth in the central part and a locally large wear depth in the outer part. The coefficient of friction and wear decreased with increasing relative humidity. Other experimental parameters also had an influence on the fretting behaviour of TiN coatings. Debris played an important role in the fretting wear of the coatings. The effects of the experimental conditions are related to the morphology and composition of the debris and its formation and elimination.
