Abstract
A new freshwater ascomycete isolated from submerged wood in New York is described as a new genus and species in the Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales. This species has globose, pseudopar-enchymatous ascomata, sparse, septate pseudoparaphyses, fissitunicate asci and hyaline, cylindrical to fusoid, phragmoseptate, isthmoid ascospores. The ascospores are distinctive from those of other genera in the Phaeosphaeriaceae in having a central two-celled isthmus. In addition, the ascospores are surrounded by a gelatinous sheath that expands in water, a feature characteristic of many aquatic ascomycetes.
