Abstract

Millions of American children are playing and competing on basketball, football, soccer, tennis, baseball, swim, and wrestling teams. Organized sports participation has become an integral part of a child's developmental experience. Children generally enjoy participating on teams, but injuries do occur. This article will focus on frequent sports injuries sustained by children during practice and competition, the injury potential of sports, and the etiology, prevention, and treatment of the injury. Items necessary for the “team medical bag” for initial treatment of sports injuries is also discussed.
