Abstract

The frequency spectra of the moving striations are investigated in the three kinds of narrow sealed-off discharge tubes with Ne, He gases and He–Ne mixture. The striations are composed of multi-frequency spectra in Ne gas and He–Ne mixture. Such multi-frequency spectra can be explained by the composite modulation of frequency and amplitude of the discharge current. The dispersion relations of the self-excited striations are investigated experimentally by using a lock-in amplifier, where the frequency is tuned to each component of the multi spectra. The results show that the self-excited striations are backward waves in all gases. However, the dispersion relation of the externally excited striations shows that the wave becomes forward at low frequencies.
