Abstract

In this paper, Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit with two area interconnected power system having diverse sources of power is studied. Two area power systems consist of the hydro-thermal unit in one area and thermal-gas unit in another area. Superconducting magnetic energy storage unit is used in the system to further improve the dynamic performances. Model is simulated with automatic generation control (AGC) and then considering AGC and SMES both. Dynamic performance of the system is analyzed by giving small disturbances in control area-01 or control area-02 or in both the areas. The deregulated model is simulated for two cases i.e. for AGC and AGC including SMES. The result of both the cases is compared and it shows that when SMES unit is considered the dynamic performance improves significantly.
