Abstract
AbstractThis chapter discusses various frequency reconfigurable antennas that are extensively used in modern wireless communication systems. It also discusses the demand and use of frequency reconfigurability in wireless systems. Next, the advantages of frequency reconfigurable antennas over multi- and fixed-frequency band antennas are described. Various categories of frequency reconfigurable antennas such as narrowband-to-narrowband, narrowband-to-wideband or notch band-to-wideband, wideband-to-wideband, multiband-to-narrowband, and multiband-to-multiband are discussed. This chapter further discusses various frequency reconfiguration techniques used to realize frequency reconfigurable passive antennas. The focus of the chapter is on the development of planar antennas. Frequency reconfigurable active antennas realized using negative resistance and feedback loop approaches are also discussed in this chapter.
