Abstract

The low field ac magnetic susceptibility of cobalt aluminosilicate glasses was measured for cobalt concentrations of 13.3 and 14.3 at% in an oscillating magnetic field of 3.3 Oe. The data show a spin glass type behavior with a sharp peak that flattens out and shifts to higher temperatures as the measuring frequency is increased. These results are analyzed according to the superparamagnetic domain model and are in qualitative agreement with the theory; however, severe inconsistencies are observed when quantitative comparisons are made. Some of these inconsistencies may be eliminated by the introduction of a Fulcher type of relaxation process: τ=τ0exp[Ea/k(T−T0)].
