Abstract

Coherent optical communication systems require the precise control of frequency and phase of a semiconductor laser used as transmitter or local oscillator by means of external circuitry. This paper first describes the necessity of frequency and phase control and reviews various control methods. Next, the importance of suppression of frequency-phase noise due to the control of the frequency and phase of a laser is discussed.
