Abstract

To the Editor: When journal editorial staff reject manuscripts without external peer review, these so-called “editorial” or “desk” rejections reduce the burden on peer reviewers and facilitate prompt decisions for manuscripts unlikely to perform well in peer review.1 While a few journals have published the procedures informing their specific editorial rejection processes,1-5 there has been no systematic evaluation across multiple journals, much less across journals from different medical specialties.
