Abstract
Abstract By means of a statistical test, it was established that the frequency of infrequent French words is related to their degree of acceptability. The basis for the test was the following: the frequency of the words was estimated by their number of occurrences in the database Frantext (INaLF, Nancy, France); their degree of acceptability was estimated by the proportion of speakers who judged them acceptable among 574 students of three French universities. A second correlation test shows that the relation between frequencies and the acceptability becomes much closer when frequencies are estimated on the basis of more modern data. These results prove that Chomsky's claim of “no relation between frequency and acceptability”; cannot be extended to the vocabulary.
